AccuWeather was founded by Dr. Joel N. Myers in State
College, Pennsylvania.

 

1967

First Snow Warning Service client served.

1970s

 

1972

The first radio station (WARM-AM, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) and
television station (WPVI-TV, Philadelphia) sign on with
AccuWeather.

 

1975

AccuWeather introduces the industry's first 7-day local
forecast for television.

1980s

 

1980

AccuWeather is named the official weather forecaster for the
Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, NY.

 

1983

AccuWeather launches worldwide forecast services and begins
transmitting weather data and text directly to newspapers'
typesetting computers.

 

1986

AccuWeather pioneers the electronic delivery of complete
weather pages for newspapers and air-ready satellite, radar,
and weather graphics for television.

1990s

 

1992

In recognition of AccuWeather’s 30th anniversary
celebration, November 15, 1992 was proclaimed AccuWeather
Day in Pennsylvania.

 

1996

AccuWeather.com launches AccuWeather.com and Local Cable
Weather™, a turnkey weather programming solution for cable
channels.

 

1997

AccuWeather founder Dr. Joel N. Myers is recognized as one
of the greatest entrepreneurs in American history in Entrepreneur Magazine’s Encyclopedia of Entrepreneurs.

 

1998

AccuWeather opens the doors to a new 52,000 sq. ft. global
headquarters in State College, Pennsylvania.

2002

AccuWeather begins services to PDAs and cell phones, and the
one billionth free page is accessed on AccuWeather.com.

 

2005

The 24/7 AccuWeather Channel™ is introduced and the ABC
Television Group becomes the first customer to sign up for
the service.

 

 

2005

AccuWeather becomes the first weather company to receive the
ESRI Special Achievement in GIS Award for our innovative use
of GIS (geographic information systems).

 

2006

AccuWeather is recognized by Congressional Committee for
warning the public of Katrina’s threats to New Orleans a
full 12 hours before the National Hurricane Center.

 

2009

AccuWeather expands its advertising sales operations with a
new office at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan and begins
providing weather for the New York Times.

AccuWeather partners with more than 85% of major mobile
manufacturers worldwide.

 

2012

StoryTeller+™, an interactive touchscreen system that
enhances the television newsroom experience, is introduced.
StoryTeller+ is currently being used in 14 of the top 15
U.S. television markets.

 

2013

AccuWeather launches first-of-its-kind 45-day forecast. (AccuWeather was also first to introduce detailed 5-day,
7-day, 10-day, 15-day, 25-day, 30-day, and 90-day forecasts.)

 

2015

AccuWeather announces historic Joint Venture with Huafeng
Media Group, the commercial weather media company owned by
the China Meteorological Administration, for the exclusive
distribution of weather information in China.

 

2017

Independent ForecastWatch analysis of 30 million forecasts
names AccuWeather the world's most accurate source of
weather forecasts and warnings.

 

2017

Dr. Joel Myers receives Lifetime Achievement Award from National Weather Association.

 

2018

Dr. Joel Myers receives Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Applied Meteorology from American Meteorological Society Award.
