AccuWeather Predicts New Orleans Tornado Outbreak First

An unusual wintertime tornado struck New Orleans yesterday morning and AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions, the world’s leading commercial weather source partnering with more than 240 of Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, provided accurate information well in advance of the twister and well before other sources.

AccuWeather warned its clients of the impending tornado at 10:28am CST. Warnings were issued prior to the expected a touch down of the tornado to allow our clients to take protective measures.

AccuWeather predicted the damaging tornado would develop between 10:40am and 11:30am CST, depending on the client’s specific location relative to the tornado’s path. The official government tornado warning was not issued until 24 minutes after AccuWeather’s.

The tornado is believed to have touched down, based on government reports, at 11:25am CST. AccuWeather provided almost a full hour of advance warning.

“Your team was spot-on with their forecasts,” said Norris Yarbrough, Assistant Vice President of Emergency Preparations and Response for Tulane University, a client of AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions that received the warning. Yarbrough has emergency preparedness responsibility for three campuses in the New Orleans metro area and received multiple updates and briefings from AccuWeather’s meteorologists as the storm moved through the city, keeping students, facility, and staff safe.
