Smith began his career at AccuWeather in 1997 as a forecasting intern before joining as a full-time staff meteorologist in 1999 upon his graduation from The Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Meteorology. Smith’s strong interest in technology, combined with his passion for research and development of new products led him to take on new roles within the company. Since then, Smith has been instrumental in driving the growth, evolution, and digital transformation of AccuWeather by leading a variety of teams and divisions, most notably as Chief Information Officer in 2007, Chief Digital Officer beginning in 2013, President, Digital Media in 2015 and previously, President from 2019.
Under Smith’s executive leadership, AccuWeather’s consumer media business expanded dramatically with the explosive growth of AccuWeather mobile and its ability to reach a global audience, helping to reshape the company into a global media and advertising leader. In addition to AccuWeather’s consumer division, other business highlights from Smith’s tenure include the brokering of strategic investments such as the acquisition of global air quality leader Plume Labs, the diversification and growth of various business units including the AccuWeather TV Network, and the launch of the AccuWeather NOW OTT streaming service.
